You’ve heard the hype, had friends rave about it, and have seen the ever growing demand for Dermaplaning. Yet, you still aren’t exactly sure what the procedure entails, and if it is really even good for your skin. Let us provide you with some great information on this growing skin care technique, everything from what the procedure actually is, to the benefits of having it done, and how often you should have it done.
Once you’ve read this article you will have all the info on this amazing facial treatment and be ready to decide if it’s for you or not. However, we must say it is basically for EVERYONE!
First things first, Dermaplaning is a highly effective exfoliation method that uses a 10 gauge scalpel (don’t freak out just yet) to GENTLY scrape or exfoliate off the top layer of skin which mainly consists of dead skin cells. This process allows the removal of these dead cells which often create a dulling/ lack luster effect on skin. Once the top layer is removed you will see a smoother, brighter complexion!
But wait there’s more!
It also gently removes that annoying peach fuzz we can feel on our face and often feel we enhance with foundation and other makeup.
Still thinking about that scalpel? Although it is the same tool surgeons use when doing surgery, when used correctly by someone licensed and certified to perform Dermaplaning, there is no need to worry. In that effect we sincerely recommend that you choose to have your Dermaplaning done by a board certified licensed professional. Our Fort Collins skin care specialists are trained, experienced, and certified. Experience in Dermaplaning is highly recommended. The procedure generally takes about 30 minutes and begins with your aesthetician thoroughly cleansing and drying your skin. Next she will pull an area of your skin taut with one hand and using the scalpel at a 45 degree angle, use soft swift strokes to gently remove the peach fuzz and top dead layer of cells. The sensation you will feel is similar to that of shaving your legs.
One of the big benefits of dermaplaning is that there is no down time after having this procedure done, and virtually no side effects. It is generally recommended for all skin types, excluding those with highly acneic skin. Once the procedure is done it also allows for a greater absorption of skin care products, thus seeing better results and brighter skin. Pregnant and nursing mothers love it for the fact that it offers great exfoliation, without the use of any harsh chemicals. Many aestheticians use it in preparation for other skin care treatments, such as laser treatments and chemical peels. It has also been proven that after having dermaplaning done, even just once, foundation and makeup go on the skin smoother and more evenly.
I know some of you may be thinking that this procedure is too good to be true. There has to be some kind of downside to all the benefits. In all honestly the only one we can think of is that after the treatment has been done your skin is highly sensitive to sunlight and may even appear a little pink. To protect it from any UV damage we recommend that you avoid any direct sunlight and use a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. This will help to eliminate any Hyper-Pigmentation as well. It’s like starting out with baby skin all over again.
Bright, smooth and virtually flawless! Dermaplaning has also been proven to help combat wrinkles and reducing dark spots. It’s attributed to increased cell turnover and can help in reducing the appearance of acne scarring.
I told you we would cover everything!
Dermaplaning removes 21 days worth of dead skin cells. Because of this, it is recommended that you let skin complete it’s natural rejuvenation cycle and wait at least 21 days before another session is done. That being said how does this procedure compared to Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skin cells. It helps uproot clogged pores around the chin, mouth and nose areas. Although microdermabrasion is a great treatment, and very similar to dermaplaning, it is a bit more abrasive and isn’t able to exfoliate off the ‘peach fuzz’, as dermaplaning will.
Now that you are a bit more enlightened on Dermaplaning, as skin care professionals we suggest that you try it at least once! We think you will love it after you see the brighter, more youthful glowing effects on your skin! We are happy to consult with you on your skin and skin care goals to help you find the perfect skin care solution for you. Who doesn’t want to GLO with youth!
